Model: MASIKA latina; Photographer: Mike Menegus Photography

Where are you from? Where are you based now and do you travel for shoots?

I was fortunate to grow up in San Diego, CA, after coming here from Guatemala at an early age. I spent some time living in the Seattle, WA, area, but until recently still considered San Diego my home. I just relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area to start a new chapter in my life. I am settling into my new home and looking forward to really getting to appreciate my new surroundings once the pandemic subsides. I haven’t really traveled long distances specifically to do a shoot, but always look for modeling opportunities when I am on the road for other reasons. I always try to make modeling part of my daily life, no matter where that may be.

Who or what inspired you to become a model?

I always had a deep desire to be a fashion model. I am inspired by the idea of helping clothing designers accomplish their goals by providing fashion that instills confidence and satisfaction to others. I realized early on how much self-confidence I gained by wearing amazing fashion and believing in myself and my abilities. I spent a lot of time thinking about the possibilities of modeling for many, many years before acting on it.

Model: MASIKA latina; Photographer: Sergio Gray Photography

How and when did you start modeling?

In 2017, I finally decided to turn my dream into reality. I had a close friend who was already modeling, so I was able to gain valuable insight into what it would take to become a successful fashion model. My goal was to incorporate modeling into my daily life and to see how far it would take me.

I started by establishing the “MASIKA latina” brand and the online presence necessary to support it. I opened a modeling portfolio website (to showcase my complete modeling portfolio), a unique Instagram and Facebook account (separate from my already established personal accounts), a Model Mayhem VIP account (to network with established photographers, models and clients,) and separate email and phone accounts to support the brand. With this foundation in place, I set out to build my portfolio.

MASIKA latina is the brand that represents me, my unique look and style, and the passion, dedication, and work ethic I bring to each assignment. I understand that success in modeling is not given, it is earned. As a result, I dedicated myself to learning the craft by passionately pursuing as many meaningful fashion shoot/show opportunities as my schedule would allow. My ultimate goal was to become a working fashion model, realizing my lifelong dream and providing those who believed in me with the best possible effort to achieve their creative and business objectives.

What type of modeling do you enjoy the most?

Most of my work under the MASIKA latina brand specializes in lifestyle, fitness, swimwear, and lingerie genres. I chose early on not to participate in nude, erotic, implied nude or fetish shoots of any kind. To me, fashion comes first, and it’s the models’ job to concentrate on complimenting the fashion, and not dominating all aspects of the shoot. At this point in my career, I am best known for my versatility, and the ability to bring a reliable best effort and meaningful results to all shoots, regardless of genre. I am most proud of my ability to help my clients succeed, to understand their creative and business objectives, and effectively bring that to life in the shoots that I do.

What do you look for when deciding to work with a photographer?

This was one of the most difficult aspects when I first started modeling in 2017. To establish myself as a serious fashion model, I worked with photographers that were networked with established clients to ensure the credibility of my portfolio. My modeling portfolio was initially established by doing “Time for Print” (TFP) shoots, where the model and photographer collaborate with no money exchanged, and an agreement to use the resulting prints for the benefit of both portfolios. I spent countless hours evaluating TFP shoot opportunities, the themes, and outfits necessary to support the shoots, and collaborating with many talented photographers to build my portfolio. Once a meaningful portfolio was established, paid assignments were offered and the nature of the opportunities shifted from TFP to paid. However, I feel that limited TFP shoots are still necessary to maintain a balanced portfolio, with themes that may be lacking from the paid assignments.

Which models or other artists currently inspire you?

I tend to be serious about my modeling opportunities, and have always been inspired by Dakota and Elle Fanning. They are currently more known as actresses but started their careers in modeling. I have always been impressed with the way they carried themselves, and their relentless dedication to quality work and high standards. In addition to modeling, music is a big part of my life. I gain inspiration from various musical artists, including Shakira, Rihanna, and Becky G. In addition to their passion and dedication to their music, I am most impressed with the way they behave away from the spotlight, leading meaningful lives and always reaching out to help others.

What would be your dream shoot?

This is an easy answer… It would be a runway shoot at a fashion event in Paris, France. To me, that would represent the ultimate modeling achievement. I hope to make that dream a reality one day.

How important is social media in your success?

There is no doubt that social media has played a big part in my success so far. It was important for me to establish social media pages separate from my personal pages. I did not want to limit myself by merging my personal life with my modeling career. I appreciate the support I have received and continue to be grateful for all of my followers, especially since I have recently relocated to the Bay Area and have had to take an extended break from modeling due to the move, followed by the ongoing pandemic. I continue to use Instagram as my primary social media presence, along with my Model Mayhem profile and my modeling portfolio website

Model: MASIKA latina; Photographer: Jay Henry Photography

What else do you like to do outside of modeling?

Outside of modeling, the most important thing to me is family. I am very close to my family and continue to stay in close contact with them. As I said before, I also like music and have a strong connection to nature. Whenever I get the chance, I like to go hiking and sightseeing in one of the most beautiful places in the world, the California coast. And there is one more very unique thing that defines who I am as a person. Many people question a Latina with the name Masika. I have always had a special connection with rain, and a beautiful rainy day almost always gets to the bottom of my soul. The name Masika means – “born during the rain.”

What is the best career advice you can give to new models?

My best advice to anyone starting a similar journey to become a successful fashion model is one simple statement. There is no substitute for hard work. I quickly learned that there are many people in modeling that lack the passion and dedication necessary to be successful. You must be dedicated to flawless execution and continuous learning as you progress through your career. Never fail to recognize that your job is to help your clients achieve the success they desire, and the focus of the assignment is not solely on the model. Prestige, glamour, and fun are all part of the mix, but hard work and passion make the biggest difference.

Where are you from? Where are you based now and do you travel for shoots?

I’m from Japan and California. I’m based in Colorado Springs, CO, for now, and yes, I often travel for shoots.

Who or what inspired you to become a model?

I was always told I should model and I started when I was young.

How and when did you start modeling?

I started modeling prom dresses in a retail store when a photographer spotted me and I’ve been modeling ever since. That was 19-years ago!

What type of modeling do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy all types of modeling, but, I think my favorites are doing things that stand out and are unique.

What do you look for when deciding to work with a photographer?

I look at their portfolios. I love to see different photographer’s visions.

Which models or other artists currently inspire you?

I love Holly Wolf. She always inspires me with her ideas and all of her photoshoots. I’m in a relationship with a really talented photographer too!

What would be your dream shoot?

I have so many dream shoots, and most involve cosplay, which I shoot all the time.

How important is social media in your success?

Social media is a huge part of my success. I have been featured on TV and that really helped grow my social media.

What else do you like to do outside of modeling?

I love playing video games!

What’s the best career advice you can give to new models?

I would say that modeling is tough. You have to work at it and you need to have thick skin to be in this industry. I’ve worked my butt off for 19-years but it’s worth it if you’re willing to put all the work in.

Where are you from? Where are you based now and do you travel for shoots?

I’m from Northern California. I’m based approximately one hour from San Francisco.

I enjoy traveling for shoots. My favorite cities to travel to is Los Angeles and San Diego, but I’m open to travel to other states to shoot, especially if the temperature is pleasant.

Who or what inspired you to become a model?

In retrospect, the desire to become a model was when I was twelve. When I was a child I remember looking through my older sister’s magazines and I was intrigued by the natural beauty of Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford, and how effortlessly they were beautiful.

The dream started there but the most compelling aspect about modeling to me is the versatility a model can have shooting various genres and the emotions a model can evoke from a viewer.

How and when did you start modeling?

I started modeling ten years ago. I signed with a talent agency in the San Francisco area and then signed with another agency in San Jose. I’m very appreciative of everything the agencies have done for me and their professionalism. In addition to modeling, a year ago I decided to pursue acting and have attended formal acting classes.

What type of modeling do you enjoy the most?

My favorite genres to shoot are lifestyle, fashion, boudoir, lingerie, and beauty.

What do you look for when deciding to work with a photographer?

The top things I seek when working with a photographer are:

  • Professionalism
  • Promptness in responding to messages
  • The lighting, composition, and if all the photos in their portfolio are confident with quality.

Oh, and of course, someone with a sense of humor. You need to have some humor during a shoot!

Which models or other artists currently inspire you?

I don’t have specific artists or photographers I follow for inspiration. However, I am often amazed at some of the work by the photographers on Model Mayhem, there are a lot of talented photographers on here.

What would be your dream shoot?

My dream shoot would take place on a tropical island, where I can find myself shooting for hours.

How important is social media in your success?

I believe using social media platforms, such as Instagram and Facebook, for modeling is crucial and beneficial. I’ve met many wonderful models and photographers through social media.

What else do you like to do outside of modeling?

Outside of modeling, I enjoy doing yoga, kickboxing, hiking, and since I’ve always been into art, I enjoy doing watercolor painting.

What’s the best career advice you can give to new models?

The best career advice I can give new models is to always be professional, punctual, and prepared. Do your research on reputable agencies if your goal is to get signed. Always educate yourself on rates if a gig is through an agency or through freelancing. Always follow your gut instinct and stay safe. And, most importantly, take care of your health and be tenacious. Modeling can have challenges and it is essential to persevere and never give up!

Model: Paigelithe

Where are you from? Where are you based now and do you travel for shoots?

I am from a small town, Melbourne, Florida. I live in East Coast Florida and I enjoy it here. I mainly travel modeling jobs, I mean that’s part of the job that you sign up for being a model.

Who or what inspired you to become a model?

I have always been an artist. I just didn’t know what type of art would choose me. My grandparents inspired me to become a model. They shaped me into the person I am today.

Model: Paigelithe

How and when did you start modeling?

I would go back as far as when I was 19. I just didn’t have the support today as I did when I was younger. My family, friends, and my boyfriend at the time, all thought that modeling was dangerous. So, most of them did not support my dream or help me in any way, but a few years later my parents and grandparents began to lighten up on the idea, and I have been pushing myself daily to succeed.

What type of modeling do you enjoy the most?

That’s a really hard question, to be honest, but I would say just about every genre of art in modeling is what I enjoy the most. You change everything up so much with a bobby pin and make it something. I just love art and I am an artist. I dive into every type of modeling so that I can be the best model out there. Anything that scares me I see as a challenge that I need to overcome. I want to live life with no fear and make it.

Model: Paigelithe

What do you look for when deciding to work with a photographer?

I call it their drive. Someone who willing to push the extra mile to do what it takes to be big and better. You don’t have to be the best photographer out there. If you are motivated and passionate about what you do I am willing to work with you and help bring your vision to life.

Which models or other artists currently inspire you?

Samantha Mathias, Scarlet Begonias, and Holly Wolf.

Model: Paigelithe; Photographer: Blaq Canvas Photography

What would be your dream shoot?

To shoot in New Zeland or Australia, with a photographer who willing to get the mindset and shot just right, and wants to have a great adventure with me!

How important is social media in your success?

Very important. It’s one of the main ways we stay connected in today’s world. If you don’t like to be on social media maybe this isn’t the career for you. You’re a role model, which means no privacy at most times and always looking your best. You have to be that superstar!

Model: Paigelithe

What else do you like to do outside of modeling?

I play video games when I can. It’s a huge stress reliever. I have been playing video games all my life, so it’s a lifestyle for me. I cosplay when I can and I love going to cons, but since the pandemic, that’s been put on hold. I also love nature. It is very peaceful. I love to go hiking or spend a day the day on the beach and turn off my phone.

What’s the best career advice you can give to new models?

Never give up, no matter what anyone says or whatever challenges you face. That is important. You fail many, many times before you become great. That’s just the world trying to get you prepared to be the best that you can be. Always believe in yourself. I believe in you. So should you!

Model: Amarutta

Where are you from? Where are you based now and do you travel for shoots?

I am from Ukraine but based in Ardeche, France. Yes, I travel a lot for modeling jobs.

Who or what inspired you to become a model?

I saw some artistic nude photos online and immediately knew that was something I wanted to do.

Model: Amarutta

How and when did you start modeling?

I started modeling 12 years ago. I went to Goncharov’s studio in Kyiv for my first paid art nude session. At that time, he was famous for his nude ballet photos.

What type of modeling do you enjoy the most?

Dance, acrobatic, contortions, art nude, experimental, and I love exploring something new.

Model: Amarutta

What do you look for when deciding to work with a photographer?

The style of the photographer and how many hours he wants to shoot. I don’t accept shoots less than 2-hours long.

Which models or other artists currently inspire you?

There are a few models doing similar work to mine that I like, for example, Laetitia Channel and PoppySeed Dancer.

Model: Amarutta

What would be your dream shoot?

I have many creative ideas in my head which I would be happy to turn into reality. I like to play with led lights and to explore making dance pictures in motion. I also like big studios with high ceiling where it’s possible to hang aerial gymnastic props to make art nude aerial photography. It can be interesting to shoot in a beautiful place in nature, on the rocks or in caves. I would be happy to travel to some exotic countries to make great photos in nature.

How important is social media in your success?

Instagram, in particular, is quite important.

Model: Amarutta

What else do you like to do outside of modeling?

The circus! I am circus artist and dancer.

What’s the best career advice you can give to new models?

Always do the best you can and enjoy it. If you don’t enjoy it, you should do something else. For art nude modeling, you need to be creative and emotional. You have to develop an understanding of photographers’ thoughts, and how you can achieve what they are looking to create, even when they are sometimes unable to fully describe it.

Model: Kafer1968; Photographer: rmsphotonut

Where are you from? Where are you based now and do you travel for shoots?

I am not from anywhere particular. My father was in the military and my mother is German. I was born in Augsburg, Germany, and moved to the United States when I was a toddler. At the age of seven, I became a US Citizen and until the age of sixteen, I traveled back and forth from Germany to the United States to different duty stations.

I am currently based in Maricopa, Arizona, and I will travel for shoots.

Who or what inspired you to become a model?

In 2009 I did a photoshoot for my boyfriend who was being deployed to the Middle East. I had such a great time doing the photoshoot and realized that many of the large companies were lacking a more mature woman in their ads, so I decided to delve into the modeling arena. As I continued to do so it was evident that this was a way for me to express myself and attempt to make everyone realize that what is missing in the advertising industry was reality. No one wants to be almost 6-feet tall and weigh 100-pounds.

Model: Kafer1968; Photographer: Mearle

How and when did you start modeling?

I started modeling when I was 41 after doing the photoshoot as a gift to my boyfriend!

What type of modeling do you enjoy the most?

I thoroughly enjoy doing implied modeling. You are displaying zero nudity, but at the same time, you are displaying a wide arrange of emotion and artistic expression (if done correctly). I also enjoy doing any type of modeling that has you out in the environment. You can express so much if you utilize your surroundings accurately.

Model: Kafer1968

What do you look for when deciding to work with a photographer?

I look at the photographer’s work. You can see how talented they are and what their definition of beauty is. When a photographer reaches out to me, I ask them what their objective is. I also look to see that they are professional, punctual, and reliable.

Which models or other artists currently inspire you?

The one artist that inspires me is Tchalla Hawk. I have worked with him multiple times and his work is amazing! He makes me want to be the best!

Model: Kafer1968; Photographer: Pixbyjay

What would be your dream shoot?

My dream shoot would be a project that shows the world you don’t have to be 20 and skinny as a rail. Just being real is powerful!

How important is social media in your success?

I believe that social media is an important key factor in your success.  Everyone is so focused on the number of followers you have but it would be so nice if the success would be more focused on your ability and work ethic.

Model: Kafer1968; Photographer: GM Photography

What else do you like to do outside of modeling?

I love being active. I exercise and ride my bike daily. I enjoy fishing, hiking, dancing, learning new things, traveling, and being involved in my community.

What’s the best career advice you can give to new models?

The best career advice that I can give is always to listen to your gut! Be safe! Do your research and ask a lot of questions. When you go to shoots, always bring someone with you. There are so many photographers out there who just want to take pictures of nude women. If you are going to do a nude shoot, ask questions. I always ask what the objective is. Why are they taking the nude pictures. Look at the profile of the photographer. If their pictures look like they are an amateur, do you really want them to take nude pictures of you? Ask questions, know who you are going to work with, and ask yourself why are you going to do this shoot?

Model Q&A: Cherry NZ

Cherry NZ | VIP Member | Verified Credits (3)

Model: Cherry NZ; Photographer: Ravii Barot

Where are you from? Where are you based now and do you travel for shoots?

I am Thai, although few people would ever guess it. My mum is part Thai, part Cambodian, and my dad was part Indian, part Italian. I now live in New Zealand, married to an Englishman.

My home is in Christchurch and I travel all over the country to shoot. I’m just as happy to work in Australia for the right projects, or anywhere else for that matter, as soon as we are able to travel freely again.

Who or what inspired you to become a model?

Deep down inside I was always a model. However, growing up in a Thai village one learns that modesty is an absolute essential. Add to that, I was constantly worried about what others might think; friends, family, people I didn’t even know. I suppose that I suppressed my desire to be a model so much that I almost forgot that it existed.

I was asked a few years ago by an acquaintance if I’d model for the local fashion school’s annual student show. I said yes, and finished up walking onto the catwalk for the first time in my life in a see-through chiffon mini-dress with nothing underneath, (which was pretty obvious under bright lights to the 800 or so people in the audience). I loved it !! Every eye was on me!

My husband sat in the audience filming through a long lens. He said that it was amazing. I walked out, strode effortlessly and professionally down the stage with a lovely smile, looking for all the world like I’d done it a thousand times before. More importantly, he recognized that deep inside me was real modeling talent coupled with an exhibitionist streak that would be a very powerful combination. He gave me the space and the encouragement to coax it out. It took a while.

Model: Cherry NZ; Photographer: Sophie McMillan, Dolce Wedding Photography

How and when did you start modeling?

A bit over a year ago we hired a photographer for my birthday; Sophie McMillan of Dolce Wedding Photography in Christchurch. About twenty minutes into proceedings, my husband walked across to make sure that she was OK. Her words, “This girl is fantastic. Why I have I never met her before? Do you think that she’d agree to do a bridal shoot in a few weeks?” At the end of the evening, she said to him, “Do you think that she’d do a boudoir shoot as well?”

To cut the story short, Sophie and my husband ganged up on me, and much against my better judgment, having finished the bridal shoot, I stood in nothing more than a pair of red high heels with a glass of wine in my hand while Sophie shot. It was the most extraordinary experience of my life. I was utterly happy and relaxed. For the first time ever, I had found something I really loved and was good at. It was like the feeling of coming home.

What type of modeling do you enjoy the most?

Nude. It’s me. I recently shot a nude video for the first time and I am thrilled with the results. It’s very different from stills and I think I like it even more.

Model: Cherry NZ; Photographer: Brian Anderson

What do you look for when deciding to work with a photographer?

They need to be technically competent, know how to drive their camera, and compose a shot. And they need to have evidence of it.

They need to be able to visualize and design a shoot and be able to communicate that vision to me so that I can deliver my part. They need to listen to the model.

I have to see the results of the shoot, most especially if it is TFP. Some photographers are good and happily give me a copy of all the images, but some still think that it’s OK to give the model a few photos of their choosing when they find time. In 2020, when we shoot 10 times more images than we ever have before, at no cost, it is ridiculous. I need to see all the images in reasonable time because I learn so much from them. I won’t do TFP shoots anymore unless I get a good copy of all images within seven days of the shoot.

More than anything, however, a photographer must be professional. They need to be able to chat and communicate through the shoot so that I am relaxed, happy, and so that I know what they are trying to achieve, but I also need to know that they are not interested in me personally. Unfortunately, there are a few who cannot tell the difference between a model and an escort. There is a clear line, and the moment it is crossed, the shoot is over. I want to create good images but have no interest beyond that.

Which models or other artists currently inspire you?

I love the work of Philippo Sano from Sicily. His stills and video are simple and beautiful and are all about presenting the model. I also like the video work of StacyQ, and I’m shooting a video in that style in a few days’ time. However, I am not really a follower of any one particular photographer or model. What influences me more is when I see an image that sparks my imagination. I save those I like to look at from time to time as a sort of mental refresher.

Model: Cherry NZ

What would be your dream shoot?

I don’t have a dream shoot, but I do have a “bucket list” of things I’d like to do.

I’d love to shoot for the famous three; Playboy, Penthouse, and Lui. To be a Playmate would be a dream come true!

I’d also love to shoot with Philippo Sano.

And, I’d love to do a shoot with the NIP Activity people (Nude in Public). It must be mind-blowing to walk around a place like Budapest or Barcelona all day wearing nothing but a smile.

Very recently a Danish friend suggested performance modeling, where one does an interactive shoot in a small theatre setting with an audience of perhaps a hundred or so. From time to time the shoot stops, you answer questions, let the audience suggest the direction of the shoot, and so on. I think that could be a remarkable experience and a new departure in modeling.

How important is social media in your success?

Very. I have only been going a short time, but I am learning fast. It enables you to reach tens of thousands of possible clients very quickly indeed, people who otherwise would have no knowledge of your existence. I tried a few times with conventional model agencies in the past and got nowhere. Since I started with Model Mayhem, I haven’t looked back. I can’t see me ever wanting to sign with a conventional agency. I still have a lot to learn.

Model: Cherry NZ; Photographer: Brian Anderson

What else do you like to do outside of modeling?

I’m a fitness junkie. I climb the walls if I haven’t been to the gym. Early next year I intended to do my first bikini fitness competition. I am loving the changes to my body over the last couple of years. I’m not finished yet.

I love hill walking with my family. It’s a great experience that we can share., and I love a fine bottle of wine by the fire at the end of the day.

What’s the best career advice you can give to new models?

Hit the gym at least four times a week and work hard. Add in running, swimming, cycling, hill walking, or whatever to give you a balanced exercise program. It’s essential for a good body, doubly so if you are doing bikini or nude. You must see a personal trainer too from time to time to adjust your routine to get the best out of it and sculpt your body.

Sort out your diet. Don’t starve. Don’t yo-yo. Eat a balanced diet. Eat the right things, the right amounts at the right times, and weight control stops being a problem. You achieve a natural balance between nutrition and exercise.

Most important of all. Stop worrying about other people and what they might think. Do what is in your heart. The happiness and contentment that I have found and the boost to my self-confidence since I have done so has been enormous. Much to my surprise, I have discovered that my friends and others do not disapprove of my modeling nude; they have become my greatest fans. They are immensely proud of me. I couldn’t be happier. My only regret is that I did not do this a long time ago.

Model: Cwen; Photographer: Mickle Design Werks

Where are you from? Where are you based now and do you travel for shoots?

I’m from Washington, D.C., where I currently reside. My home base has changed a few times over the years (LA, Vegas, Wichita), but my wanderlust has not. I’ve traveled mostly within the U.S., and I have had the privilege to shoot outside the country a few times.

Who or what inspired you to become a model?

I can’t remember who but I was inspired to become a model because I enjoy being a part of a creative process — any part, and I hadn’t really spent a lot of time in the spotlight at that point in my life. I wanted to know what it felt like. My parents were supportive of my efforts in my childhood, but nothing came of it back then.

Model: Cwen; Photographer: Maze Studio

How and when did you start modeling?

While I had my first shoot when I was about 13, I didn’t really pursue modeling until I was 18. In July 2007, I went to my first “meet and greet” and things took off from there. I actually found it through the Model Mayhem forums, and I still work with a few of the people I met that day.

What type of modeling do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy abstract nude modeling and free-form posing. Clothes are rather stifling.

Model: Cwen; Photographer: Charles Nevols

What do you look for when deciding to work with a photographer?

I look for the level of detail they’ve provided on their profile when it comes to actually work with them. Have they discussed payment? Do they talk about their process? Do they credit their models? I’ve contacted photographers with stellar portfolios, offering them a payment, and never received a response. So, what matters most to me is receptivity and how easy they seem to work with.

Which models or other artists currently inspire you?

Corwin Prescott and Nicole Vaunt never fail to leave me in awe. Mosh, Emma Vauxdevil, and Raquel Reed have solid work. As I also do burlesque, I find those aesthetics just wonderful.

Model: Cwen; Photographer: Corwin Prescott

What would be your dream shoot?

I really want to do more video work — and I really want to nail down the most epic pole shoot ever, before I’m physically incapable! If I can do that without needing to worry about styling or makeup, that would be a dream come true. I can honestly say I’ve tried almost everything on my to-do list (underwater, horseback, sploshing, latex), but trying is not succeeding. The more challenging it is and the more I can focus on just modeling and not balancing hair and makeup, the better my brain feels.

How important is social media in your success?

I could say that it’s incredibly important as it’s the reason I started modeling at all, but I’m barely able to advertise on many sites due to my nudity. I have taken many, many breaks over the years and I’m still surprised by how many people have heard of me at some point or another. It’s really wonderful, but the shift in social media’s dominance has definitely altered the landscape.

Model: Cwen; Photographer: Nick Smith Media

What else do you like to do outside of modeling?

I love to perform — burlesque and pole dancing are my two most visible hobbies when it comes to online presence. When I’m home alone you can probably find me sewing, watching Netflix, or playing The Sims. Right now I’m looking into going back to school for Social Work.

What’s the best career advice you can give to new models?

Know your boundaries. Know industry standards. Know your hard boundaries, but also know the ones you are willing to negotiate in relation to where you are in your career and local market. Get to know other models and even find a mentor — it’s way easier than it used to be when I started — and collaborate with them so you’re not undercutting any of your colleagues or putting yourself in danger. Check your references, but know that references aren’t infallible. Discuss the details of a shoot before showing up, and never be afraid to say no to something that makes you uncomfortable. Lastly, when it comes to shooting nudes, it’s harder to retrace your steps when you want to do other types of work. Compartmentalize like a boss.

I am from a lot of places. I’ve lived in Hoboken, NJ, and most of my gigs are NYC based and I do some traveling for shoots.

Who or what inspired you to become a model?

Modeling is something I fell into. I was a dancer and more interested in acting when a music producer I was singing for suggested I try modeling. I also had a mentor that encouraged me.

Model: Glamour Jessica; Photographer: Felix Natal Jr.

How and when did you start modeling?

I have been in the modeling business for a while. I am very grateful for all the wonderful assignments I’ve come across.

What type of modeling do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy all types of modeling, but I have great admiration for pinup and old school Hollywood style. I adore the Marilyn Monroe look and have done look-alike modeling as her.

Model: Glamour Jessica; Photographer: Chuck Arabella

What do you look for when deciding to work with a photographer?

I look for good communication with a photographer, a strong portfolio, excitement for their craft, and professionalism.

Which models or other artists currently inspire you?

I adore Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford, and Tyra Banks. I also admire Beverly Johnson for being the first African American model on the cover of Vogue. I’m inspired by confidence, vulnerability, passion, and creativeness.

Model: Glamour Jessica; Photographer: Susanne Kaltsas

What would be your dream shoot?

My dream shoot is to model on the beach. That is my favorite place to be!

How important is social media in your success?

I think social media plays a part but I try not to get caught up in the hype of it.

What else do you like to do outside of modeling?

I like to create music, walk, and run in the park, read, and I’m always striving to be a better person.

What’s the best career advice you can give to new models?

I would tell new models to do your research in the industry. It helps to have an image in mind when planning looks for a photoshoot. Study the supermodels.

Creativity, imagination, and passion!

I’m inspired by risk and art! Starting something I have no idea how to finish.

I love being in front of the camera, but there are so many things that I like to do for fun: Watch the sunset, play board games, do a road rally with friends.

Model: Coco Xixou

Where are you from? Where are you based now and do you travel for shoots?

I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, and I am currently based in the DFW area. Although Dallas is my favorite city, and the talent here is overwhelming, I thoroughly enjoy the traveling aspect of this job and I am always open to travel.

Who or what inspired you to become a model?

At 13, I auditioned for Booker T High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and got accepted as a jazz piano major. Since Booker T includes courses in dance, theatre, music, and visual arts, all of the students are required to take classes in all four fields. We were consistently training to become well rounded and polished in all categories of creativity, which I am, to this day, so grateful for. I miss my fellow students often because each person that I crossed paths with taught me so much about the true value of art in every form and how one cannot exist without the other. The energy in the building was, “Everyone and everything is fabulous,” so the hallways were the runway. Admiring the fashion industry and becoming interested in modeling definitely stemmed not only from being a student but also from being surrounded by so many creatives at such a young age that were already doing it!

Model: Coco Xixou

How and when did you start modeling?

By my senior year at Booker T, the piano was just the tip of the iceberg on my schedule. I was getting recruited to do professional makeup for drag shows, styling opera singers for performances at the Winspear Opera House, and making extravagant gowns from scratch just for fun. Somewhere along the way, I became close with a group of professional photographers who would often ask me to be their subject. Once that started, I found myself in front of the lens more often than not, and then people started asking for my rates. I could barely manage my 9-5 job because of it. I had no other option but to quit because modeling suddenly (and accidentally) became my full-time job. It happened naturally, as everything should.

What type of modeling do you enjoy the most?

I truly admire the unpredictability of deconstructed posing. High fashion, editorial, and avant-garde concepts are fascinating to me because it takes bravery and the possibility of discomfort to execute it well. I sometimes refer to the highly abstract shoots as opening the “emotional flood-gate” or revealing “the ultimate escapist fantasy” by expressing the emotions that people usually tend to repress, because that’s exactly what it is.
It takes sacrifice. There are no rules. There is no formula. There are no limits. That is the definition of art.

Model: Coco Xixou

What do you look for when deciding to work with a photographer?

I look for a good reputation in the community – not only in regards to treating models with respect but also mutual respect between crew members on set. I could never fully understand all of the microscopic details that the art of photography and cinematography entails – which is why I would never try to direct a photographer during a shoot. The trust that is shared between artists when sharing a creative space is the one thing that is going to allow the magic to come to life. For example, when the photographer has complete trust and faith in the model’s ability to understand his or her vision, that gives them the freedom to capture those vulnerable and authentic moments. When the model has complete trust and faith in the photographer’s eye, that gives him or her the freedom to move without restrictions and find that “flow.” Without that, the shoot would run in circles.

Which models or other artists currently inspire you?

I am heavily inspired by music, and most of the concepts I come up with are based on my dreams, musical artists, movies, or books that I have read. At the moment, I would have to say that my biggest inspiration is an incredible gospel vocalist and songwriter that goes by the name of “Lalah Hathaway.”
Believe it or not, she can sing two notes at once – what an inspiration!

Model: Coco Xixou

What would be your dream shoot?

My dream shoot would be to do a fully nude series with the one and only Mario Sorrenti in Tulum, Mexico. The last time I visited Tulum, I did some exploring deep in the jungle, and there are truly no words to describe the scenery. I can only imagine what he could capture in a place like that. Although he is not known for being an underwater photographer – in my dreams, he is. Doing something underwater with him would definitely be a big check off my bucket list. He has an extremely patient eye, truly understands the importance of creating the perfect energy on set for a concept involving nudity, and last but not least, he has an immaculate amount of respect and admiration for the models that he works with.

How important is social media in your success?

I am one of those people that can put my phone on airplane mode, and go days without feeling the itch to pick it up. Contrary to that, I have to set alarms to make sure that I am consistently keeping up with my social media accounts. It is a very important part of my job and extremely necessary when it comes to searching for local talent and connecting with new clients. As of lately, I have tried to put more effort towards connecting on a personal level with my audience and doing more things to give back to my followers, which not only feels good but gives me more motivation to keep moving forward at full speed. My teachers in high school always told us that encouragement should always be reciprocated because you will always get back what you give. Based on the results I’ve seen so far, they were right!

Model: Coco Xixou

What else do you like to do outside of modeling?

I am a project manager and creative director for a creative team based in Dallas called “Le Visage” (French translation: “The Face”). Our mission is to challenge the status quo of the fashion industry, unify the artistic community and turn even the most extravagant visions into a reality. We have a photographer, retoucher, wardrobe stylist, hairstylist, makeup artist, and posing coach, whose talents become a massive force when brought together.

Other than that, during my free time, I spend my afternoon’s recording music in my home studio, which I will definitely be integrating into my career further down the road.

What’s the best career advice you can give to new models?

Whether you are signed with an agency or strictly freelance, never be afraid to put your foot down and trust your intuition. My mentor, Lenny Wheeler, told me something during our early days of working together that has stuck with me. He always told me to “never accept anyone’s definition of your life but your own,” and that “no one can determine the value of your time but you.” You are the one in control of the wheel, and you are more than capable of carving out your own path with your own two hands. There is no box you need to fit in because you have every right to customize your career as a model, even if some say you can’t. The best part is knowing the faith you have in your own abilities will always be a stronger force than someone else’s opinion, and you are only bound by the limitations that you create for yourself.

Model Q&A: Thistle

Model: Thistle; Photographer: Bernardo S-L

Where are you from? Where are you based now and do you travel for shoots?

I grew up in Oregon and Washington along the Columbia River, but I’ve lived in New Orleans for the past ten years. I travel often for shoots, though in less hectic times many photographers of varying kinds come through New Orleans.

Who or what inspired you to become a model?

In the beginning, it was being scouted by an artist who asked me to pose for him, but eventually, it became a tool for me to explore new ways of movement and understanding my body. I am a dancer and martial artist, so any chance to approach a new physical technique is really compelling to me. Also, it has been a wonderful way to fund traveling and exploring new places.

Model: Thistle; Photographer: PERRYJULIENPHOTOGRAPHY

How and when did you start modeling?

The first time it came up I was working, signing up members on the street, for a nonprofit that did forest restoration work. I was approached by an artist who asked me to pose for him. I quickly responded, “Definitely not,” despite being 18 and curious. I was both a tomboy and generally skeptical, but he showed me some of his work and introduced me to another model he worked with, and the pay was good, so I was like, “Sure, why not try this weird new thing?”

The weird new thing ended up being what has now been a 10+ year adventure into exploring all different kinds of environments and physicalities through modeling.

What type of modeling do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy art nudes. Especially art nudes in nature. I am a nature enthusiast generally, and in my modeling, I gain a lot of inspiration from my surroundings. For example, how will the curve of my hip fit against that rock? How will my hands look under the water? Is that climbable?
I also enjoy location or studio shoots with lots of interesting objects to climb on or use as props, costumes to wear, or a character to strive to emulate.

Model: Thistle; Photographer: lightturnstolifephotos

What do you look for when deciding to work with a photographer?

I ask two main questions. Is their work compelling, fun, inspiring?
And, can I verify their safety and experiences with other models?

What would be your dream shoot?

Oh, good question… I think it would be exciting to do an on-location forest or desert shoot with a fun concept or storyline, such as “Lost in the woods,” or some fantastical post-apocalypse vibe.

How important is social media in your success?

I don’t know as I have never had social media. I’m a bit of a technophobe. When I began modeling that wasn’t an issue. It used to be having a Model Mayhem profile and Patreon was enough to get very consistent work, but now it seems that models have to be much more involved with self-promotion. I’ve never been great at that. I just let my portfolio speak for itself, but I’m thinking of looking for some technical support to promote myself more these days.

Model: Thistle; Photographer: 56thandwabasha

What else do you like to do outside of modeling?

I enjoy carpentry and DIY projects, gardening, martial arts, dancing, and being in the woods with my friends and loved ones, or occasionally on my own.

What’s the best career advice you can give to new models?

In the beginning, find a niche. I’m a natural model and that has limited my opportunities in some more commercial ways but has also guaranteed me to work with photographers in a more long-term way. There are many models, what makes you engaging? Later on, explore whatever concepts you want, but it’s always nice to have a guaranteed audience to fall back on.

Tatiana Tayeh | VIP Member | Verified Credits (17)

Where are you from? Where are you based now and do you travel for shoots?

I was born in Ukraine, but I grew up in Russia. For the past few years, I’ve been bicoastal, traveling between New York City and Los Angeles, but I travel for work all over the country, and abroad if needed.

Who or what inspired you to become a model?

When I lived in Russia, I worked in a bank and did photoshoots just for fun as a hobby with my girlfriend who had a camera, but I never thought it could be a career for me. I thought to be a model is something not serious enough to be a profession, at least this what I was told, but everything turned upside down in my mind when I moved to NYC.

There are so many creative, open-minded and talented people here, it’s a Mecca of fashion and beauty! After arriving, my new American friends would ask me, “Why don’t you model? You have that look, shape, and personality!” Initially, I was doubtful, but then, having remembered my dream to be a supermodel, I said “Yes” to my inner voice.

How and when did you start modeling?

I started modeling professionally about five years ago. I was doing TF shoots to build my portfolio, and I remember the first photographer asked how long I had been modeling, and when I said that first shoot he was very surprised, as I moved very naturally and knew how to pose and express myself.

What type of modeling do you enjoy the most?

Everything. I like fashion and editorial because you can create very interesting looks, and I like lingerie and boudoir because I can express my feminine sexuality. In lifestyle shoots, I can show my real everyday personality.

What do you look for when deciding to work with a photographer?

Well, my list of requirements not too long… I guess I’m not a super picky model, but I like to work with personalities, and a good friendly attitude is perhaps the most important for me, whether the photographer is experienced or not.

Which models or other artists currently inspire you?

Natalia Vodyanova is my favorite! I admire her as a woman and as a model.

What would be your dream shoot?

To shoot with David LaChapelle.

How important is social media in your success?

It’s not really. I’m not a very active user. I need someone to manage social media for me! I try to regularly upload photos and show a private part of my life. I do receive good modeling offers through it, but it’s not my main source for getting jobs.

What else do you like to do outside of modeling?

Psychology! That’s what I’m planning to do when I’m old and gray. It’s my hobby. I’m interested in life coaching, quantum construction of the universe, modern quantum psychology, and energy practices. I also like to paint.

What’s the best career advice you can give to new models?

Follow your dream and never compare yourself with anybody! Enjoy your body and your look – reality is the mirror of what you think about yourself. You are a unique creature and only you can determine how your life and career will look, there are no external obstacles.

Model: Christelle

Where are you from? Where are you based now and do you travel for shoots?

I’m from a very small town near Quebec city. Now, I live two hours south of Montreal, and I travel in the US and Europe for shoots.

Who or what inspired you to become a model?

I’ve always liked photography, painting, dance, drawing fairies, and making my own clothes, and so it’s a universe that seemed pretty appealing to me.

Model: Christelle, Photographer: Sylvain Entressangle

How and when did you start modeling?

Two years after finishing high school I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life, and It felt like there was always something missing. I worked on farms, and that’s probably the job I preferred, but it is seasonal and I had no income for the winter. When I was 20-years old, I saw an ad in a newsapaper in Quebec city looking for models. I thought I would try it since I’ve always been curious about modeling. It was a very small agency that mostly aimed toward (cheap) glamour. They once told me, “Hairs are not considered aesthetic in photography.” According to them, I should shave “down there” and get a fake tan to be a model. At that point, I thought I’d prefer to go back to working on a farm than follow their standards.

Not long after, I discovered Model Mayhem, and I got booked by many photographers who appreciated my natural style. Soon after I realized my dream of going to San Francisco in 2007, and I’ve never stopped traveling since then. I’m pretty sure I was the first traveling model in Quebec. I didn’t even know how to name my job at first and the term, “Traveling art nude model” came years later. Naming it became quite useful.

Another funny thing is that, in the small agency decided models doing non-nude work would be paid $20 per hour, and $25$ per hour for nude. For me, at that time, those rates were incredible and thats why I decided to do nude work – for the extra $5 an hour! Bear in mind, I was used to manual labor, and I never in my life thought I could be paid that amount for doing something fun! I noticed in a meeting we had (models and photographers) that they were talking about a website they were not allowed to mention in front of models. I ended up discovering that it was Model Mayhem, and they didn’t want us to know because otherwise we would obviously we would join and get paid much higher rates!

One day, a photographer booked me for 3-hours and paid me $80. I felt very bad for months (not kidding) because he paid me $5 more. And then. everything changed when a photographer in Montreal told me, “Models not as talented as you are paid $100 per hour. I don’t have it with me now because I didn’t expect you to be so great, but I’ll give you $75 per hour.” Of course, I couldn’t believe it! The pictures we made are still very easy to find when online and they are very pretty, but I’m still most grateful for his honesty, otherwise I may have never traveled and modeled professionally.

What type of modeling do you enjoy the most?

I prefer less planning and more spontaneity. Let’s try something crazy! I enjoy iy most when you’re connected with the photographer and there’s no rule except the present inspiration!

Model: Christelle

What do you look for when deciding to work with a photographer?

Creativity. Even if the photographer isn’t professional, I can see in his pictures if he likes what he does and if he’s looking for “the shot.” If so, I know we’ll have fun and create great work together.

Which models or other artists currently inspire you?

I really like Leya Smith, the French model. She started modeling as a way to heal, without any pretension, and she’s damn good. I really like Melissa Trout also! She’s a friend of mine. We started modeling at the same time and we both have daughters born in March, but 10-years apart. I think both of them prioritize their personality over their appearance and this is the most empowering thing to me.

Model: Christelle, Photographer: Stef-D

What would be your dream shoot?

Any time I can act as if i was in a Parrish painting, on the top of a hill with the wind blowing, and I can touch heaven. Dancing with the elements is what makes a picture for me, because you are not acting, you are feeling it. I had the joy to do it in Ireland, California, and Greece, but i still dream of finding the perfect hill. I like working with any natural element because it’s impredictable and you need to improvise to make it work, especially water and wind.

How important is social media in your success?

I’ve never had Facebook and I finally started an Instagram account in 2017. But, it was shut down when I had 20k followers (as happens to many models). It really helped getting more contacts around the world and some contries use it more then others, but Model Mayhem is safer, especially because of Verified Credits, and you don’t get banned for showing nipples! So, social media can be helpful but you can get all your work on here.

Model: Christelle

What else do you like to do outside of modeling?

I dance, and I practice contorsion (splits, bridges, handstands, etc). I play the piano, flute, and guitar. I also paint, and love walking in the woods. I make my own clothes too. I can say that I’m definitely never bored!

I recently created an OnlyFans page and I’m loving it. I love modeling but I really enjoy dancing too. I’m currently creating a lot of videos for my OF page and I always have new ideas, and different lighting styles. I’m a pretty good photographer too. OnlyFans really helps me discovering and pusing into my creativity!

What’s the best career advice you can give to new models?

Stay yourself! Something rare is more valuable than something too common, and the only way to stand out is to be yourself because you were born unique! And, this is very important – Enjoy all the amazing landscapes you’ll see on the road but don’t get caught in the traveling model thing too long and lose all your friends because you’re constantly traveling. If you have no one to share it with you may feel lonely, and a life with no loved-ones isn’t worth it. Find a place that you call your home and meet people, create your circle. We grow with the bonds we forge. I love helping new models, so, if you think I could help, please don’t hesitate to contact me with your questions.

Model: Xtin Bleu, Photographer: JPrice Photography

Where are you from? Where are you based now and do you travel for shoots?

I was born and raised in the Philippines. I currently live in the Connecticut/NYC area. I travel for paid shoots and I’m willing to shoot TFP if it is in my area or a personal project that I want to work on.

Who or what inspired you to become a model?

I have always had a passion for creating art. Something about the human body, the way it moves, facial expressions, and how a person can tell their story through their eyes, body language, and how all of these come together in an image has always moved me and brought me to appreciate beauty in different forms. I love looking at a photograph and figuring out the message behind it. It’s amazing how photographs can make us feel. Jasmine Sanders inspires me a lot in the modeling industry. I love how she works in front of the camera and shows her real persona.

Model: Xtin Bleu, Photographer: TS Imagery

How and when did you start modeling?

I started modeling in August 2018. One of my co-workers at that time was a photographer and he asked me if I was willing to work with him and capture some outdoor images. I was so nervous and wanted to cancel at the last minute because I had no idea how to pose or what to do, but he made me feel comfortable and confident, and our photos came out amazing! Ever since then, he told me that I should look into modeling work, and I started working with multiple photographers around my area. I enjoyed it a lot, built my portfolio, and eventually quit my job for modeling.

What type of modeling do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy shooting boudoir or photoshoots that tell a story, like a movie but captured in a moment of time.

Model: Xtin Bleu, Photographer: Dimitrius Photography

What do you look for when deciding to work with a photographer?

I look for comfort the most. I want to be myself and not have any awkward moments. I don’t care if you are just starting out with photography, I will work with anyone who can make me feel my best while shooting.

The quality of their work also plays a huge role. I can’t have photographers give me low-quality images (let’s just be real). I work hard and give my all while modeling, so it’s only fair that I get great quality images in return!

Which models or other artists currently inspire you?

Kevin Dirks has always been my top photographer. The way he made me feel throughout our shoots and his work just amazes me every single time! I got the best photos and learned a lot from him.

Model: Xtin Bleu, Photographer: JPrice Photography

What would be your dream shoot?

My dream shoot would be a series of photos of me naked in nature, capturing every emotion and movement around it. Wild and free is the theme.

How important is social media in your success?

Social media has played a huge role in my success. That is where I get exposure and meet talented models and photographers in the industry. Although social media can have a negative side to it, it can affect you positively as long as you follow the right people, those who will benefit you and your career. Most of the photographers that I have been shooting with are people I met through social media.

Model: Xtin Bleu

What else do you like to do outside of modeling?

Whenever I am not modeling, I usually cook and blog. I’m a vegan chef, so I enjoy making healthy dishes and sharing them with the world. I also love to hike, travel, meditate, workout (pilates and yoga), and live life to the fullest!

What’s the best career advice you can give to new models?

My advice to new models is to keep pushing yourself for greatness. We all have to start at the bottom and no matter how hard it can get, if you really want it, you can make it happen. You will meet photographers who you will have bad experiences with, so make sure you research people you are meeting and working with before you agree to the shoot. It’s a crazy world we live in right now, so always make sure you are safe and working with someone reliable that you can trust.

Do not give up! If it is something that you really love or a passion that you want to pursue, be ready to experience the bad with the good. It will not be an easy ride but it’s so worth it. Nothing worth it in life comes easy. No matter how many people turn their backs on you, stay strong, and be a fighter. You can achieve anything you put your mind to.

Where are you from? Where are you based now and do you travel for shoots?

I’m born and raised in Los Angeles, and I still live here. I travel sometimes for shoots, but not too often, because luckily there’s already a lot of work in LA. But, if the right opportunity presented itself, I would definitely love to travel! I’ve always wanted to go to Miami Swim Week… maybe one day!

Who or what inspired you to become a model?

I actually started my journey in the industry as an extra on film and TV sets, originally thinking that I was just going to make a little extra cash while I was in school. But when I was on set, I felt the magic of the entertainment world and I also met some amazing people who told me I should try modeling and acting. One thing led to another, and now I’ve done dozens of commercials, campaign shoots, and booked my first TV co-star role this year on Apple TV’s “The Morning Show.”  I feel like everything truly happens for a reason, and sometimes God just has other plans for you.

Model: Rachel Ramos

How and when did you start modeling?

I never thought I would be a model. I actually wanted to be a TV news reporter and went to school for that. I even got my Master’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism from USC. But, it didn’t really work out. LA is my home and I couldn’t get myself to leave. I also started to realize that life is short and sometimes, you just have to do the things you’ve always wanted to do. That’s when I discovered that it’s actually possible to make modeling and acting a career. But, it wasn’t easy. I work so hard, and now, I do this full-time, but, I’m still far from where I want to be.

What type of modeling do you enjoy the most?

I love acting and modeling in commercials the most. I’m kind of a goofy fun outgoing person, and I love getting to smile and laugh on set. I also love working with positive creative people. Plus, I feel so grateful to represent such amazing brands. One of my favorite shoots was working with GrubHub and getting to eat a bunch of yummy food on-camera. I also love being a spokesperson for brands and I’m the official spokesperson for the Ontario Auto Center and had seven commercials that aired on local TV.

What do you look for when deciding to work with a photographer?

I love working with creative people, it’s definitely one of the amazing perks of the job. I love working with directors and photographers who have positive and uplifting attitudes but can also challenge me and push me to do my absolute best.

Which models or other artists currently inspire you?

I love Selena Gomez and how she uses her platform to make the world a better place. I’ve always admired how humble and kind she is, and how she does a million things, from acting to music, and now she even owns her own cosmetics line. Definitely an inspiring female to look up to!

What would be your dream shoot?

My dream print job would be to shoot for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit. My dream commercial job is to shoot a commercial for my most favorite place in the world… Disneyland! And, my dream acting job would be a series regular role on a sitcom.

How important is social media in your success?

It’s honestly semi-important. I used to stress over Instagram, always trying to pump out content and reinvent myself. But now, I’ve just learned to post whenever I feel like it or whenever I feel proud of a project I’ve been a part of. It’s definitely important to have some of your work on there for clients to see, but I would say, don’t stress yourself out to have the most glamorous IG unless a goal of yours is to be an influencer (which there’s nothing wrong with).

What else do you like to do outside of modeling?

I’m very close with my family and we always go to Disneyland or the beach! I’m a simple gal, I just like to watch movies, bake sweets, and play video games. I also love yoga.

What’s the best career advice you can give to new models?

Feel proud and confident about who you are. If you’ve been chosen for something, don’t second guess yourself. You’re meant to be there because the brand or company saw something in you, so don’t doubt your amazing capabilities! And don’t forget to have fun!
