Model portfolios

A model’s portfolio is like a key card to access the building where she works; without one she can’t work. Needless to say, a portfolio is a very important investment in her future and career.

Model portfolios are usually bound folders with the agency’s logo printed on the front cover and a number of clear plastic sheets inside to showcase her best photographs. They are usually referred to as “books” within the industry.

Portfolios are taken to castings and auditions where the client may look through it to determine whether the model is right for the job at hand. A portfolio showcases the versatility of the model and could help the client’s imagination when trying to answer the question of who will best sell their product. However, it is common for clients not to look through a model’s book at all. They often want to see the model face-to-face, take some snapshots and decide from there if she’s right for the job. This doesn’t mean, however, that a model should take a chance and arrive without a portfolio.

Model: Maria Eriksson

What is in a portfolio?

Each agency will advise their models to display portfolio photographs in a particular way. Most agencies like the images to be no more than six months old to reflect the model’s current appearance and showcase up-to-date photography and fashion trends.

Most agencies recommend a mixture of headshots, three-quarter or half-length shots and full-length shots in a model’s book. A headshot is most often used as the first image in a model’s portfolio. After that, half and full-length images follow to clearly display the model’s body.

Model: Maria Eriksson

Avoid having numerous images in the same outfit or location, or even having images all shot by the same photographer. A mix of photo angles, fashion including swimwear and/or lingerie, hairstyles and makeup in images from different photographers will all collate to show the model’s versatility and therefore increase her potential of landing a job.

It is advantageous to know who the client is or what the job is for before attending the casting or audition. With this information a model can add or subtract images from her book, catering to the job for which she is applying. For example, if she is auditioning for a swimwear client, have a slight swimwear or lingerie bias in her book as opposed to ski wear or fashion shots covering her body.

As a model’s career grows, she should replace the images in her portfolio with tear sheets, which are images of the model torn from printed media such as magazine advertisements. These show prospective employers proof of her experience and visibility.

Model: Maria Eriksson

The future of portfolios

While working in Asia my agent asked me to use an iPad as my portfolio. Many agencies now prefer a tablet to display work as opposed to a printed book. Using a tablet rather than a printed portfolio has both advantages and disadvantages.

A tablet device like an iPad means there are no printing costs associated with continually adding images to portfolios—high quality 8×12 prints can be expensive. And, since an iPad is backlit, images “pop” in a way they don’t in a printed portfolio.

Model: Maria Eriksson

However, tablets are not cheap. A printed portfolio with an agent’s logo costs around $50, but of course there is also the continual printing cost of the images on top of that. Images can be updated on a tablet by merely swapping photos in and out of folders, which is easy and cost-free. It is also a great advantage to have several portfolios on a tablet in different folders displaying separate work. Swimwear, lingerie, lifestyle, sports or catalog work can quickly be presented to differing clients.

Model: Maria Eriksson

One thing a printed portfolio is advantageous for, in my opinion, is to display tear sheets and published work. Some think that magazine and catalog images look better than as a digital file and their authenticity cannot be questioned. The demise of printed magazines and rise of online publications mean that tablets could soon become the sole means of displaying a model’s work. However, it is best to consult your agent before investing in a tablet for portfolio use.

To summarize, a model’s portfolio is a key instrument for her career and should illustrate her versatility and experience. Whether it be in print or tablet format, a good portfolio is a wise investment.

Why Every Model Needs Polaroids

$
0
0

Key Points:

  • Agencies and casting directors often require Polaroids – not having them can cost you the job
  • Learn how to take Polaroids and when to update them
  • Read our insider tips from an experienced agency model and photographer

Polaroids, also known as “digitals,” are a model’s best friend. Whether you’re a new model who has never done an official photo shoot or a model with years of experience, good Polaroids are a gateway to better shoots and more work. And, since it is standard industry practice for agencies and casting directors to request Polaroids, it’s a good idea to include these in your Model Mayhem portfolio where you can easily access them.

Agency digitals used to be taken with a Polaroid camera, hence the name. These days, “Polaroids” don’t need to come from a Polaroid camera. A digital camera is fine!

What are Polaroids? Polaroids show what you look like when you walk through the door. It’s important for photographers and casting directors to know what you look like before the makeup, hair, lighting and Photoshop. “Clients trust Polaroids,” said photographer John Fisher, he added, “They assume you are going to show up for a casting or job with the same hair, weight and general appearance as in your Polaroid.”

These photos can be used to submit for jobs and casting calls (in addition to a polished portfolio) or to apply to agencies.

How to Take Polaroids

How do you take a perfect set of Polaroids? First, these should not be professional photos. If you have a friend with a decent quality digital camera, that will be ideal.

Do not wear makeup or style your hair. You want these photos to showcase your unaltered look.

The best time to take the photos is during the day. Try to find a white or off-white wall to shoot in front of, preferably in the shade or on an overcast day. Direct sunlight can be too harsh for a quality Polaroid.

While different agencies and jobs call for different things, it is hard to go wrong with Polaroids in swimwear, but if you’re not sure feel free to clarify with the agency or casting director. This will show not only what your hair and face look like, but your body. It will show if you have tattoos, scars or tan lines and how easily concealable they are, which is important for casting directors to know when choosing talent. Wearing heels is the one “cheat” you get, which will lean and lengthen your frame.

While the combinations can be left partly up to you as a model, generally it’s good to include a full-body front photo with a relaxed pose, a close up face photo, a three-quarter profile and a full profile shot.

Keep it Simple

Having great poses in your arsenal is important for a model, but this is not the place for them. You want your poses to be natural and relaxed. If you’re having trouble looking relaxed, remember to breathe. You don’t have to get the perfect photo in one shot. Take a few minutes to try different things and then review the photos to see what works and what doesn’t.

“Lately, I’ve noticed that models are even posing and expressing some personality in the pictures. But remember, these pictures are primarily to show the essentials of what you look like. Therefore, they have to be updated every few months (or more frequently if you get a significant haircut, etc.),” said John Fisher. Feel free to play with a few expressions, but don’t get too extreme. A soft, natural smile is good to showcase in one of the photos, as is a focused expression. Save your screaming and growling faces for you next photo shoot!

Insider Tips

Agency represented model, Kelli Kickham recommends that “While it may be tempting to shoot from a “MySpace” angle (above you), be cautious. Shooting from above will shrink your body and make you appear shorter—something most models won’t want. Also be cautious of having the pictures taken from too low. You legs may look very long, but the distortion is probably obvious to a trained eye. If you’re tempted to see if you can get away with just a little makeup (or Photoshop), don’t. Unless the casting director or agency asks for it specifically, they are probably expecting no-makeup photos, and you would be surprised how much a trained eye can catch.”

And, John Fisher adds, “Models already represented by an agency will have to update their Polaroids if their general appearance changes, and it is not uncommon for clients to ask models to take a Polaroid during a casting. This is one reason why I always suggest that a model carry a simple swimsuit with them at all times.”

The Model Mayhem Interview: Jaylynn Mitchell (JEM)

Jaylynn Mitchell, otherwise known as JEM, is a freelance fashion, glamour, art and body paint model. Her discovery by a photographer in Minneapolis launched her career and took her to Chicago, Philadelphia and finally San Francisco. JEM has worked with hundreds of photographers from all over the world. Her work has been featured in galleries across the US and published in countless magazines.

JEM’s about to embark on her 2014 Southwest tour, starting in Las Vegas on March 3, before traveling to Albuquerque, Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, New Orleans, Birmingham, Tulsa and Phoenix. Contact JEM for more info, tour dates, availability and bookings.

Model: JEM; Photographer: Phillip Ritchie; Makeup Artist: Daisy Sanchez

MM Edu: Tell us about your journey in the modeling industry, from how you got started to how you made it here?

JEM: I was 18 years old and attending Aveda’s cosmetology school in Minneapolis when I was randomly found (while drinking coffee) and picked to be a runway model for a show. That show led to my first photoshoot, with Dean Johnson of MM, and then with numerous photographers around the area. I began traveling and working with some really amazing photographers. I then moved to the Chicago area to pursue modeling full-time. I started traveling all over the country for shoots with hundreds of people. I was working my butt off and that hard work paid off. I moved to the Philadelphia for a couple years to be on the East Coast before finally settling in the heart of San Francisco. I couldn’t be happier with where I am now or the path I took to get here. I still travel full-time (it’s almost 7 years now) and plan to do so for several more years.

Model: JEM; Photographer: Dean Johnson

MM Edu: How difficult was it for you to make it as a freelance model, what challenges did you have to overcome?

JEM: It seemed impossible at first. Even though I started getting paid work from the beginning, I didn’t really think I could actually make enough to be able to travel full-time without another job. It took me a year or so to finally be able to afford my own traveling up front. In the beginning I relied on many people to help me, and a lot of great people also helped me build an amazing portfolio. As soon as I started traveling around, I found that I actually did really well for myself and I always kept moving forward,  even if some trips failed or didn’t go as well I would have liked. To this day, not every trip works out the way I intend but it’s all part of the game. You win some, you lose some but you just gotta keep moving forward and keep at it.

Models: JEM & Justin Wimmer; Photographer: Veney Photography

MM Edu: Do you have a preference for any particular genre of modeling?

JEM: I do all types of modeling. I shoot anything from commercial, fashion, swimwear, glamour nudes, art nudes, body painting and even pose for many different types of artists. I am experienced in all types of modeling and enjoy shooting everything. I prefer to have a more “open” concept, as I can be freer with my emotions and posing, but shooting for a specific project is always inspiring as well. I just love to shoot!

Model: JEM; Photographer: Julian W I L D E; Wardrobe Stylist: Raven Wilde; Makeup Artist: Jodi Vaughn

MM Edu: What do you consider the major achievements in your career to date?

JEM: Well, besides working for numerous companies and designers I admire, I have worked with many top photographers/teams and got the chance to travel the country shooting and walking for many different people. I have worked for HBO (which was HUGE), many different magazines, top designers around the world, and some of the best body painters in the world. I am proud of everything I’ve accomplished. Each job is so different and unique, and requires a lot of hard work and effort. So, I couldn’t choose just one thing.

Model: JEM; Photographer: Danger Ninja Production

MM Edu: And, what’s the most unusual or unique shoot you’ve done?

JEM: I always love doing the body painting shoots and conventions/competitions. Not only are the people amazing, but the talent and the imaginations are out of this world. Although it is tiring to have to stand still and get painted for hours (usually anywhere from two to ten hours), the end result of being fully painted up makes it all worthwhile. Being a moving, living piece of art is always empowering and inspirational.

Model: JEM; Photographer: Brad Olson

MM Edu: How do you prepare for a photo shoot?

JEM: After shooting for so long it’s become second nature. I always get lots of sleep (every model needs her beauty sleep) and I never starve myself or anything like that before a shoot. I find it unhealthy and can leave you lacking energy. It’s better to eat healthy, take vitamins and to have a certain “photo shoot diet,” rather than to not eat at all. I always shower, wash my hair and exfoliate my skin before a shoot, so that it looks healthy and clean. Other than that, just being mentally prepared is always important. Make sure you are happy, healthy and well rested. Your mental state is much more important than anything else.

MM Edu: What’s your dream modeling job?

JEM: I think my dream modeling job would have to be a Sports Illustrated photo shoot at some exotic beach location. I have always loved the magazine and I admire the way they show the sexy side of the models without being trashy. I would love to do the body painting for the magazine as well. Not to mention working with the awesome photographers they use for their magazine as well… but that’s just a given.

Model: JEM; Photographer: JHernandez; Retoucher: The Next Affect

MM Edu: Who or what inspires you?

JEM: There are many girls who inspire me, and some of the models on MM are always inspirational. The photographers and all their amazing images too. Just looking at everyone’s work is always inspirational for me. Between the models, photographers, artists and body painters, even the makeup and wardrobe people; there are just so many talented people around. The more I look at other people’s work the harder I push myself to be a better person and model. It also helps to stay humble and to realize you can always be better. It’s important as an artist to constantly challenge yourself by continuing to step outside of your comfort zone. Challenging yourself in all types of modeling will make you a better model and push you to take your skills to the next level.

Model: JEM; Photographer: T H Taylor

MM Edu:
What’s the best and worst thing about being a model?

JEM: The best is seeing your pictures all over the place and being able to say, “Hey, that’s me, I did it!” It’s always exciting to see your success.

The worst is the stereotypes and gossip/rumors people start. It’s hard to ignore sometimes. People can be mean, but you will go far if you just stay true to yourself. It’s important to try not to get too involved in the drama of the industry. Focus on yourself and what you have to do to succeed, while staying out of all the drama. It’s usually one of the hardest things to do, but keeping a positive image for yourself is much more important than becoming “friends” with everyone.

Model: JEM; Photographer: Pixel Art Photography; Makeup Artist: Lindsay Schneider

MM Edu: You travel extensively, often spending only a day or two in each city, what’s your secret to looking great despite all the traveling?

JEM: I really try to take good care of myself. It’s important not to overwork yourself, to eat healthy and to get plenty of rest. I do push myself too much sometimes and I end up getting sick or tired. So, try to be aware of your body. You can only do so much. Push yourself, but also know your limits and do what’s best for you.

MM Edu: Outside of modeling, how do you like to spend your time?

JEM: If I am not traveling, when I am home in San Francisco, I spend most my time with my lover and friends in the city. I’m often preparing for my next trip. I always have tons of emails to get to, travel plans to prepare and so much more to do. Modeling is definitely a full-time job. I enjoy shopping (DUH!), and designing, so I tend to always be stretching my creative mind in some way. I’m a big foodie and enjoy eating out in different places. There is such a wide variety of foods in San Francisco. I also enjoy wondering around and exploring this beautiful city. It’s fun and always inspirational. There is so much to see and so many things to do.

Model: JEM; Photographer: Scott Church

MM Edu: What do you having coming up that you’re most excited about?

JEM: I plan to head overseas early next year. I’ve been out of the country but never been to Europe. I plan to see Barcelona, Milan and Croatia. I’ll be shooting in such beautiful places, but I still plan to have a lot of free time to explore and learn about each city. I am SUPER excited!

MM Edu: Do you have any advice for up-coming models?

JEM: DONT GIVE UP! It’s hard and painfully difficult sometimes, but always keep moving forward. You will feel discouraged many times but it’s important to remain focused on the goal. Be safe, check references, and always be prepared. My best advice is that if you want to start traveling, JUST DO IT! The first couple of trips might not work out exactly as you hope, but you have start somewhere. You have to get your face out there in different areas and let people know who you are. Network, network, network, and it will all fall into place eventually.

Model: JEM; Photographer: Robert Alvarado

MM Edu: What does Model Mayhem mean to you, on a personal and professional level?

JEM: Model Mayhem is where I got started. I know so many people on the site and I wouldn’t know any of them if it wasn’t for Model Mayhem. It’s a great community and it’s also where I met most of my close friends. I’ve been on the site for more than five years now and have gotten so much out of it. Besides being a Gatekeeper for the site and working on it, it’s been the main way I have gotten to travel around the world and meet such talented people. I don’t feel that I would have made it this far without Model Mayhem. The site has definitely given people another option besides agencies in this industry, and it has given so many members exposure and the chance to show off their talent. It’s a hard industry to make it in, but MM has been a stepping stone for me and many other successful people.

How to Find Models to Test or Trade with You

$
0
0

As creative people in the modeling/photography industry, there are times when taking on a project where no money exchanges hands can be fun, be a learning experience, or otherwise be a positive process. This is what we define as a “test” or “trade” shoot. Unfortunately, finding a model who shares the same vision and willingness can take some time and effort.

Model: IDiivil; Photographer: Michael Magers; Hair Stylist: Karen Bates-Ashley

Here are two lists that cover the reasons why a model may be unwilling to test or trade with you and what you can do to improve your chances of snagging a shoot with the model of your choice.

14 Reasons why a model may turn down a test shoot with you

1. They don’t find your work to be helpful to their book.

2. They don’t find your concept to be helpful to their book.

3. They don’t care about modeling and just use it as a way to get money.

4. They don’t have much time, so if they have the spare hours they’re going to take paid gigs or nothing at all.

5. They have too many images already and don’t care to have more – either in the genre you are looking to shoot or in general.

6. They don’t understand what trade or test is, and/or don’t see the value in it. They may argue, “Why would I work for free?”

7. They cannot tell the difference in quality of images, so they can’t tell if you are better or worse than the average photographer (or they don’t care). In this case, even if you feel your work is much better than the model’s portfolio and can be an asset to them, they won’t see that.

8. They are signed with an agency that determines who they trade or test with and therefore cannot work outside of that agency.

9. They are willing to trade, but your concept infringes upon a boundary they’ve drawn.  For example, a model who would trade for clothed shoots all day may not want to shoot nudity without being financially compensated.

10. Along those same lines, the model is asked to trade a genre they are unwilling to shoot, no matter the circumstances.

11. Something about the photographer offends the model, whether it’s the manner in which the model is offered the trade shoot or the photographer’s profile. Even something as simple as not crediting a single model in one’s portfolio can be of note to the model.

12. The model can’t financially afford to trade.

13. The model may prefer trading in a situation where makeup, hair, wardrobe, cool location or publication opportunity is offered.

14. The model only trades with good friends whom they can trust to be reliable, comfortable and fun to work with.

Model: IDiivil; Photographer: Barry Druxman; Wardrobe Stylist: Vic Sanders

9 things you can do to get models to work with you

1. Pay your model.

2. Improve your portfolio.

3. Write more models. Consider writing models of different looks and skill levels to contact.

4. Make a casting call.

5. Reassess the message you are sending to your models. Maybe something you are writing to them or something in your profile text is sending them red flags.

6. Offer extras such as publication opportunities, makeup and hair stylists, unique wardrobe, gas money, food, amazing locations and anything else that can make your offer stand out among others.

7. Give examples of the genre you are asking the model to do. If you want to shoot fine art and have no examples of fine art, the model may be unwilling to offer their time if they are unsure the image will be useful to them.

8. Find a way to network with models so you can be on a comfortable, level ground with them to offer a trade shoot.

9. Keep an eye on your internet presence. Coming across online as a difficult person will get noticed if a model does a little digging, and that can turn them off from otherwise shooting with you.

Model: IDiivil; Photographer: Joe Gunawan fotosiamo
Hair Stylist: Dinah Raphaelle; Wardrobe Stylist: Samantha Freedman

Please keep in mind that while these potential reasons are extensive, they may not cover your model’s specific situation and/or may not offer the perfect solution for you to improve your chances of getting test shoots.
